Hidden atop a hill in Los Altos Hills, a residential neighborhood with beautiful views of California’s Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay, stands a residence coined as the House of Thorns. The brainchild of Cambridge, Massachusetts-based architect WOJR that reused the existing concrete foundation, this two-story creation boosts six tower-like extrusions or “horns” on the exterior with an expansive, open-plan living area with various ceiling vaults that intersect in the interior of this 8,500 square foot home.

 

To help to illuminate this tranquil home, our S Series surface-mount round downlights are custom recessed in the warm oak wood and concrete ceilings. The 4-inch, ultra-thin S Series, offered in both round and square shapes, features an edgeless design for an elegant look and delivers pure, efficient, even illumination that transforms spaces while disappearing into them.

This 3,600-square-foot cast-in-place concrete home was designed and built by the architect for his family on a 40-foot vertical slope, requiring innovative planning and engineering. Each level integrates outdoor volumes with picture-frame-like edges, allowing occupants to enjoy the canyon’s sounds, smells, and beauty as if choreographed. The architect specifically chose DMF Lighting for its technical ease of installation in cast-in-place concrete and the ability to quickly swap trims, color temperatures, and lenses. This flexibility enabled efficient and precise tuning of the home’s lighting. Given the exposed concrete, the architect had only one chance to locate the lighting, and DMF’s directional LEDs allowed for adaptation to layouts that may not have been originally planned.

M Series Residential

The M Series Residential family is part of DMF’s most versatile, M Series product offering. Centered around a compact, four-inch, plug-and-play LED module with an embedded driver the M Series delivers the optimal balance of form and function. Paired with one of the award-winning M Series Housings, you can achieve fire, sound, wet location, and other ratings required for the most demanding projects. The M Series, true to all DMF offerings, provides outstanding illumination and color consistency while being simple to specify, install, and maintain.

The AIA|LA + ACLA Center for Communities serves as a hub for architectural discourse and public engagement, providing a space where professionals and the broader community can collaborate on design solutions for a more sustainable and equitable future. Located within a historic 1927 neoclassical bank building, the project seamlessly integrates modern functionality while preserving the building’s original character.

 

The high ceilings and classical architectural details required a subtle yet impactful design strategy. Working closely with HLB Lighting Design, the team selected high-performance, low-profile lightning solutions that seamlessly integrate into the space. The use of DMF’s Lighting’s X-Series, S Series and DCD3 & DCD4 ensures optimal illumination while maintaining a clean and unobtrusive aesthetic.

X Series

The X Series family is DMF’s two-inch high performance product line with lumens ranging from 750 to 1500. The drivers are integrated into the light engine as opposed to the housing, and the X Series housings have a unique trap door that provides post-install access to the splice box below the ceiling plane. The X Series offering includes both downlight and adjustable modules that allow for uncompromised performance, seamless finishes, and ease of serviceability. 

S Series

The 125,000 sq. ft. renovation required a sophisticated, multi-layered lighting solution within a tight timeline. With various spaces needing distinct lighting applications, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic was essential. DMF Lighting’s M Series Commercial Downlights provided the necessary versatility, offering multiple beam spreads, lumen packages, and finishes to create a seamless design throughout gaming areas, VIP lounges, dining spaces and corridors.

Cushing Terrell has a view of the downtown Seattle waterfront and the Olympic Mountains. There was a focus on reusing materials from their previous office. A kitchen, dining room, and design lab were added for collaboration and socializing.

A 1,900,000-square-foot building that draws inspiration from many cultures with Japanese-style minimal aesthetics and a French-style bistro. The luxury rooms include private terraces and large closet space. Guests can access a fitness center, spa, and rooftop pool.
